Winners Announced for Be Still Show |
Ken Reif, Best of Show - with Jim Hey
Still life painting enjoys a long rich tradition in two dimensional art
work. From flowers to fruit to eggs in a basket or even chips and
dip! The Next Picture Show invites today’s painters to dazzle the many
viewers of this juried show with their innovative or traditional still
life paintings. This is an all painting exhibition.
Judge for this event was Jean Spohn.
A reception kicked off the show from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. June 27 at the gallery.
- Best of Show: Ken Reif, Berwyn, IL, "Corner Chair"
- Judge's comment:
The artist borrows Van Gogh's perspective from "Van Gogh's Bedroom." It
becomes interesting how one gets caught up with the corner of the room;
the floor doesn't work to the corner. Nevertheless, it becomes
intriguing and holds the viewer's interest. Reif's style in all his
pieces is bold and confident, but becomes most serious in this piece.

1st Place: Jane Cress Edgar, Grand Detour, IL, "Lilac Time at the Cottage"
Judge's comment: The fresh colors truly create this piece as well as the free brush strokes.

|
2nd Place: Jayne Rose, Grand Detour, IL, "Grand Old Apples"
Judge's comment: The artist was clearly able to get three apples to scream their presence. The paint remains fresh and not overworked.

2nd Place: Jayne Rose |
|
3rd Place: Vince Torano, "Nowheresville"
Judge's comment: Between the mixed mediums and the collage, Torano takes a new approach to a conceptual piece.

Judge's comment: Eating alone draws the viewer in as it tells a story while you sit at the table in the lower left hand corner and look on.

Honorable Mention: Joyce Bietau-Rieken, "Oranges"
Judge's comment: Ricken handles color and texture so well -- the realism happens because of them.
